A sweetheart handkerchief
Edward Elliman Militaria will bring this sweetheart handkerchief to the National Antiques, Art and Vintage fair at Limerick Racecourse on September 5 and 6. Embroidery messages like this were often sent by soldiers during World War I. A pocket in the middle featured a photograph of the soldier. This one dates to 1907 and was made in Egypt, then a protectorate under the British Empire. Several flags are shown. It is inscribed “To My Dear Friend Kate”. Remarkably there is a handwritten address on the back showing that Kate was Mrs. Kate White then resident at Francis St. in Limerick. The identity of the sender is unknown. The two day weekend fair will offer a wide variety of art, antique furniture and collectibles.
